Job summary

  • Builds, tests and maintains bespoke web and mobile applications that streamline how information is processed and shared across the organisation.
  • Works with stakeholders to identify opportunities, document expected benefits and deliver reliable, reusable applicationsand services.
  • Monitors applications in production, responds to failures and adapts solutions to changing needs.
  • Maintains a central library of shared components and documentation so applications are robustandsupportable.
  • Supports integration delivery by building and maintaining APIs and integration points, working closely with the Integration & Automation teamwhere required.
  • Contributes to AI-enabled workflow enhancements by integrating approved AI servicess andMCPpatternswhere applicable, ensuring safe and compliant implementation.
  • Uses AI-assisted development approaches to improve delivery speed and quality, applying a human-in-the-loop model with appropriate governance, code review and testing.

Main duties of the job

  • Specialises in application developmentandworks with stakeholders to identifyopportunities for application improvements, automationandAI-assisted workflow enhancements.
  • Develops and builds application features from agreed specificationsprimarily using the Trust's core stack (.NET/C#, SQL Server, React,React Native,TypeScript, HTML/CSS/Tailwind).
  • Supports the delivery and maintenance of application services (web and mobile), under the direction of the Principal Developer (Applications).
  • Supports the delivery and maintenance of SharePoint where required, including workflows, pages/sites and contentupdates.
  • Implements releases and environment changes in line withagreedCI/CD processes.
  • Develops and runs tests to validate application changes.
  • Maintains and supports existing applications.
  • Monitors and fixes defects orperformance issueswhere required.
  • Builds and maintains documentation to support reliable operations and change control.
  • Provides day-to-day coaching and support to junior team membersortrainees, including task guidance, peer review and sharing good practiceacross application development.

Job description

  • Write, amend, refactor and document applicationcodeusing modern tooling and technologies, such as. NET (C#), SQL Server, React, React Native, TypeScript, HTML,CSS, Tailwind,Microsoft Power Platform, SharePoint,IIS and Azure services.
  • Operate and maintain applications in productionandact as first-line support for application issues.
  • Apply modern UI/UX principlesto deliver usable, accessible and responsive application solutions.
  • Build and maintain front-end features that followapproved patterns such as theNHS Design SystemandMPFT Design System.
  • Contribute to and maintain ashared component library, including documentation, examples, and versioning to encourage consistent use across applications.
  • Helpassessrequirements,document solutions and benefits, and prepare specifications.
  • Work with stakeholders toidentifyservice improvement opportunities thatimproveapplicationfeatures.
  • Quickly assess feasibility of new opportunities and feed into prioritisation.
  • Follow agreed standards and methodsandwork with colleagues to undertake code reviews.
  • Keep skills current,track technology changes, propose improvements and contribute to modern, well-engineered solutions.
  • Apply security controls and handle information safely. Help identify risks and mitigations,including secure codingand governanceand escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Support and maintain live applications. Troubleshoot using modern toolsanddeploy releases via agreed CI/CD processes.
  • Estimate own effort and contribute to planning,followingthe agreed delivery methodology.
  • Produce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), run-books and user-facing guidance, supporting adoption/training where required.
  • Support CAB activities by collating, tracking and presenting evidence for assurancewhere required.
  • Prepare project plans and status reports in line with internalprocessesfor assigned workstreams.
  • Work closely with the Principal Developer (Applications) on features, deployment schedules, service impacts and expected benefits.
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders and project teams.
  • Track delivery against targets, flag issues early and help adjust plansto retain quality and to meetrequired timeframes.
  • Contribute to reliable day-to-day operations of the application portfolio and supporting services.
  • Grow capability to deliver changes of increasing complexity with greater autonomy over time and support knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Support the delivery and maintenance of APIs,working closely with the Integration & Automation teamwhere required.
  • Carry out routine monitoring of applications(availability, errorsandperformance), escalating issues and contributing to incident/problem resolution activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for applications to support reliable operations.
  • Use AI-assisted development techniques to accelerate delivery and improve quality, while maintaining human oversight through peer review, testing, documentation and governance.
  • Deliver AI-enabled application features using approved AI servicesandMCPpatterns, ensuring traceability, safe handling of information, and compliance with governance, security and clinical safety requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day coaching and support to junior team membersortrainees, including task guidance, peer review and sharing good practice across application development.
