Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Digital team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as an Automation Developer. Reporting to the Digital Automation Specialist, you will design, build, test, implement and support Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and low-code solutions that improve efficiency, quality and safety across the Trust.

You will work across the full automation lifecycle, translating requirements and process documentation into reliable automation solutions using technologies such as Microsoft Power Automate and Power Apps. You will also support testing, deployment, monitoring, maintenance and continuous improvement of live automations.

Working within an Agile environment and following agreed development standards and governance, you will collaborate with Digital colleagues, clinical and corporate services and technical teams to deliver effective automation solutions. The role provides opportunities to develop your technical expertise through practical experience, structured training and mentoring while contributing to the Trust's digital transformation programme.

Main duties of the job

As an Automation Developer, you will:

  • Design, develop and configure RPA and low-code automations using Microsoft Power Automate and Power Apps in line with approved requirements and standards.
  • Translate process documentation and requirements into reliable solutions, including appropriate exception handling and auditability.
  • Undertake unit testing and support system and user acceptance testing, documenting results and implementing fixes and improvements.
  • Deploy and support automations in production, monitor performance and resolve incidents, escalating complex issues where required.
  • Follow established deployment, release and change processes to support safe and effective delivery.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, including solution designs, build notes and support guides.
  • Work within an Agile delivery model, participating in sprints, stand-ups, planning, reviews and retrospectives, and using Jira or equivalent tools to manage work.
  • Provide guidance to users on existing automation solutions and support less experienced colleagues through knowledge sharing and documentation.
  • Follow information governance, confidentiality, security and clinical safety requirements when developing and supporting automation solutions.
  • Maintain awareness of RPA, low-code technologies, APIs, web services and webhooks, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

Job description

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Digital Automation Specialist, the post holder will design, build, test, implement and support Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and low code automation solutions to improve efficiency, quality and safety across the Trust. The post holder will contribute across the automation lifecycle (requirements clarification, build, testing, release and support) using Microsoft Power Apps and Power Automate, working within agreed standards and governance.

The post holder will have experience of coding and/or exposure to RPA bot development and will use this to deliver reliable solutions, as well as to support monitoring, maintenance and continuous improvement of live automations. The role will be delivered in an Agile environment (e.g. sprint-based delivery), using tools such as Jira to track work and outcomes.

The post holder will develop their skills in RPA and low-code technologies through structured training, mentoring and practical experience

Key Duties:

Develop and configure automations and low-code applications in accordance with approved designs, standards and requirements.

Interpret process documentation and requirements and translate these into working automations, including appropriate exception handling and auditability.

Undertake unit testing and support system and user acceptance testing; document results and implement fixes and improvements.

Deploy and support automations into production, monitor performance, and resolve incidents; escalate complex issues appropriately.

Uses established deployment processes and tools to support testing and release activities.

Produce and maintain technical documentation (solution design notes, build notes, support guides) to ensure solutions are maintainable by the team.

Follow agreed automation standards and contribute suggestions for service improvement within the team..

Work in an Agile/sprint delivery model, participating in ceremonies (stand ups, sprint planning, reviews/retrospectives) and using Jira (or equivalent) to manage tasks, defects and changes.

Provide guidance to users on existing automation solutions and escalate requests requiring specialist assessment.

Support the safe use of automation in a healthcare setting by following information governance, confidentiality, and security requirements in all development and support activities.

Works under the guidance of the Digital Automation Specialist, referring non-routine or complex issues for review.

General Duties:

Provide practical support and knowledge sharing to less experienced colleagues, including contributing to internal training and documentation.

Awareness of APIs, web services and webhooks and their use in automation solutions

Keep up to date with relevant developments across RPA/automation and low code tooling, and identify opportunities for improvement and adoption.

Undertake any other duties consistent with the level of responsibility of the post.
