Job summary

A Band 6 Triage Core Midwife is responsible for providing expert clinical assessment, prioritisation and management of women accessing maternity services, ensuring safe, timely and effective care within the maternity triage setting. The post holder assesses maternal and fetal wellbeing using the Birmingham Symptom-specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) to support risk assessment, clinical decision-making and the appropriate allocation of care pathways. They identify risks and complications, initiate timely interventions, coordinate referrals to the multidisciplinary team as required, and ensure effective escalation of concerns. Working autonomously and collaboratively within the wider maternity team, the Band 6 Triage Midwife delivers evidence-based care, supports women and their families in informed decision-making, maintains accurate documentation, and contributes to clinical leadership, service improvement, and the supervision and development of junior staff and students to ensure the highest standards of patient safety and care.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking experienced and motivated midwives with a strong foundation in evidence-based midwifery practice and a commitment to delivering high-quality, woman-centred care.

The applicant must be a registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and possess substantial post-registration experience across the maternity pathway. They will have a sound knowledge of normal and complex pregnancy, labour and postnatal care, with a thorough understanding of maternal and fetal assessment, risk identification, safeguarding, and emergency obstetric situations. Experience of working within a maternity triage environment and using the Birmingham Symptom-specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) to assess clinical acuity and prioritise care is highly desirable.

The post holder will demonstrate excellent clinical assessment, decision-making and prioritisation skills, with the ability to work autonomously in a fast-paced and often unpredictable environment. They will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling them to provide compassionate care, support informed decision-making, and work effectively within the multidisciplinary team. The ability to escalate concerns appropriately, maintain accurate documentation, utilise electronic patient record systems, and support the learning and development of colleagues and students is essential.

Clinical

  • Provide expert triage assessment and care for women accessing maternity services, using the Birmingham Symptom-specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) to assess clinical acuity, prioritise care, and determine the most appropriate pathway of management.
  • Work within an integrated model of maternity care across community and acute settings, supporting seamless, woman-centred care throughout the maternity journey.
  • Undertake comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, recognising and responding promptly to actual or potential complications, escalating concerns appropriately and liaising with obstetric, neonatal and multidisciplinary colleagues as required.
  • Be competent in core midwifery skills, including venepuncture, cannulation, intravenous drug administration, CTG interpretation, maternal and neonatal resuscitation, and emergency obstetric care.
  • Demonstrate confidence and competence in managing obstetric emergencies within both hospital and community settings, responding effectively to rapidly changing clinical situations.
  • Deliver and maintain a high standard of evidence-based midwifery practice, ensuring safe, effective and compassionate care within the triage environment.
