Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Salaried GP to join our friendly and forward-thinking practice in the heart of Gosforth.

We are looking for a GP to work 5 - 6 sessions per week, with Friday as one of the regular working days.

The surgery serves a patient population of around 13,500 and has operated a total triage system using SystmConnect since February 2024 to ensure efficient, patient-centred access to care.

Main duties of the job

In accordance with the practice timetable, as agreed, the post-holder will be available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion. The post holder will also take part in day time on call sessions weekly.

Job description

  • Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
  • Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
  • In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health.
  • Providing counseling and health education.
  • Ensuring appropriate follow up of patients.
  • Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring to other care providers as appropriate.
  • Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards.
  • Collecting data for audit purposes.
  • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible).
  • Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate.
  • Working with and supporting other members of the primary health care team in delivering high quality primary health care.
  • In general the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.
  • Promoting the application of standards and codes of Practice set by the Royal College of General Practice, General Medical Council, Department of health, and Local NHS Trust.
  • Play a leading role in the practice achieving agreed QOF and other key performance indicator targets.
  • Take lead responsibility for targets and service allocated.

Other Responsibilities within the Organisation:

  • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g. prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety.
  • Commitment and contribution to achievement of the highest possible quality standards such as the QOF and other key indicator targets.
  • A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice.
  • Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation.
  • Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records
  • Contributing to the summarising of patient records and Read-Coding patient data.
  • Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.
  • Assistance with the training of other staff members and also with the education of doctors and nurses in training as appropriate.

They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines.
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks.
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards.
  • Reporting potential risks identified.

The post-holder will:

  • Apply practice policies, standards and guidance.
  • Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work.
  • Participate in audits where appropriate.

The successful candidate will work as part of a supportive team, including experienced GPs, practice nurses, HCAs, Pharmacists and a Frailty ANP. You will deliver high-quality, evidence-based care across a mix of online, telephone, and face-to-face consultations. You will benefit from regular clinical meetings and mentorship.

  • Clinics consist of 12 x 15-minute appointment slots to support high-quality patient care
  • Low visiting commitment (shared with our dedicated visiting service and Frailty ANP)
  • Opportunity to contribute to the teaching and training of GP Registrars and Medical Students.
  • Experienced multidisciplinary team with a strong focus on collaborative working and patient-centred care
  • Established use of SystmConnect Total triage system since February 2024.
  • Incoming clinical letters are workflowed by Administration team.
