Job summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated Pre-Assessment team within the Women and Newborn Care Group at the Princess Anne Hospital.

Job Title: Healthcare Support Worker -(Progressive Band 2 to Band 3)

Contract Type: Permanent - Part time 27 hours per week

Please be advised that this vacancy may close earlier than stated if we receive a large number of applications.

If joining as a Band 2, this role requires a 9-month training period, so applicants must already have the right to work in the UK for the full duration. If your current visa does not provide at least 9 months of remaining permission to work from the start date, we are unable to progress the application.

If you are joining as a band 2 this position is part of a development programme that supports you to grow into a band 3 role, with a pay increase upon successful completion. If you are already working in a Band 3 HCSW role in the NHS, we will assess your experience and responsibilities against the competencies required for this position. Where these competencies are met, we will match your current pay and banding.

This role requires acute hospital experience as a Healthcare Support Worker. It is most likely the successful candidate will already be working as a Band 3 HCSW.

Main duties of the job

As part of our team, you will work as a Healthcare Support Worker in our Pre-Assessment service, working closely with Registered Nurses, Anaesthetists and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care across a variety of clinical settings. Our clinic supports patients preparing for surgery within the breast and gynaecology pathways, ensuring they receive safe, efficient and compassionate pre-operative assessment.

The service operates Monday to Friday between 7:30am and 5pm, with potential weekend working in the future. Applicants must be flexible and able to work three days per week within these hours.

You will be part of a service that consistently receives excellent patient feedback, with several recent positive reviews highlighting the professionalism, kindness and efficiency of the team. In this role, you will work within the "fit and well" pre-operative assessment pathway, reviewing and triaging patient health questionnaires and completing pre-assessments for this patient group. You will play a key role in ensuring patients experience a smooth, supportive and high-quality journey throughout their surgical pathway.

Due to the nature of the service and the need to maintain privacy and dignity, we welcome female candidates to apply.

Job description

In this role, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Demonstrating previous HCSW experience, supported by a relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification, to ensure you have the required skillset from the outset. You will be expected to confidently carry out:
  • Observations
  • ECGs
  • Urinalysis
  • Venesection
  • Within your first 46 weeks, you will also be expected to:
  • Use eCamis/CHARTS to check clinics, scan documents and request tests
  • Under supervision, run a preassessment clinic for lowrisk surgical patients, assessing their health questionnaire and providing information for their day of surgery
  • Triage health questionnaires using set criteria to ensure patients are streamed to the correct pathway
  • Apply your understanding of surgical preassessment or womens health is therefore desirable

A detailed job description and person specification are attached.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
