Job summary

The post holder will train as part of the Clinical Endoscopist team, supporting the safe and effective delivery of endoscopy services across East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. Working within the multidisciplinary team, they will contribute to both general and specialist endoscopy activity.

The role will involve working across the Burnley site and other ELHT locations as required, including providing backfill for cancelled endoscopy lists. Flexibility is essential, as the service operates during daytime, evening and weekend sessions.

The post holder will complete a recognised Clinical Endoscopist training programme and a period of supervised practice before progressing to independent work. Training will initially focus on either upper or lower GI endoscopy. Once independent practice is achieved, the role banding will be reviewed, with a further review following completion of all GI modalities and the Independent Prescribing qualification.

Alongside developing procedural skills, the post holder will contribute to Clinical Endoscopist-led services, clinical audit, service improvement and research. They will support evidence-based, high-quality care and work collaboratively to maintain professional standards across the speciality, with opportunities to develop clinical leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will attend internal and external meetings, both face-to-face and virtual, and will represent the Trust professionally at all times.

They will support the Lead Nurse Endoscopist, Endoscopy Matron and Endoscopy Operational Manager in preparing and submitting the annual Joint Advisory Group (JAG) evidence portfolio.

The post holder will demonstrate strong clinical leadership and nursing expertise, including infection prevention and control, and will contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that ensure safe and effective practice, such as the WHO checklist.

Working alongside the Lead Nurse Endoscopist, Clinical Director, Endoscopy Matron and senior clinicians, they will help maintain a robust clinical governance framework to ensure patients consistently receive high-quality care in line with National, Trust and JAG standards.

They will act as a proactive change agent, promoting innovation and supporting a positive culture of improvement across nursing, medical and multidisciplinary teams, guided by current research and relevant NICE, BSG and JAG guidance.

Job description

  • Train to undertake upper or lower GI endoscopy procedures under supervision, progressing to independent practice following completion of the recognised Clinical Endoscopist training programme.
  • Deliver safe, highquality endoscopy care across ELHT sites, including Burnley General Teaching Hospital and other Trust locations as required.
  • Participate in backfilling cancelled endoscopy lists and support flexible service delivery across daytime, evening and weekend sessions.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, request and interpret investigations, and contribute to timely patient assessment and management within scope of practice.
  • Provide clear, balanced explanations of procedures, risks and benefits, and obtain informed consent in line with Trust policy.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation, including endoscopy reports, audit data and electronic records.
  • Contribute to Clinical Endoscopistled services, service transformation projects and pathway improvement across the gastroenterology and endoscopy service.
  • Support the development, implementation and evaluation of evidencebased clinical guidelines, standards and audit tools.
  • Participate in audit, research and quality assurance activities to support JAG standards and continuous improvement.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, safety and high-quality patient experience across the endoscopy service.
  • Act as a positive role model, demonstrating high standards of patientcentred care and professional behaviour.
  • Engage in clinical supervision, annual appraisal and ongoing professional development, including progression towards Independent Prescribing where applicable.
  • Support the multidisciplinary team by sharing specialist knowledge, contributing to staff development and promoting lifelong learning.
  • Assist in the delivery of training, study days and competency assessment for endoscopy staff and learners.
  • Establish effective communication with patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team, including handling sensitive or complex information with empathy.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across ELHT to ensure integrated, safe and efficient service delivery.
  • Support the dissemination of good practice and contribute to a positive, open learning culture.
  • Adhere to Trust policies, national standards and regulatory requirements, including safeguarding, infection prevention and health & safety.
  • Ensure safe use of endoscopy equipment and report any issues or risks promptly.
  • Maintain compliance with mandatory training and contribute to the Trusts clinical governance framework.
