Job summary
To work as an autonomous practitioner, responsible for the provision of medical services to the practice population, delivering an excellent standard of clinical care whilst complying with the GMS contract. Furthermore, the post-holder will adhere to the GMC standards for good medical practice, contributing to the effective management of the practice, leading by example, maintaining a positive, collaborative working relationship with the multidisciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
The core responsibilities of a salaried GP include:
- Providing effective medical care to the assigned population.
- Delivering services in line with the GMS contract.
- Following local and national guidelines for prescribing.
- Managing long-term health conditions effectively.
- Timely processing of administrative tasks, including referrals and prescriptions.
- Participating in telephone triage and duty doctor roles on a rotation basis.
- Maintaining accurate clinical records according to best practices.
- Engaging in research and clinical trials.
- Collaborating equally in practice workload.
- Adhering to clinical guidelines and quality audits.
- Contributing to continuous improvement and quality initiatives.
- Accepting responsibility for specific areas, including the QOF.
- Actively participating in practice meetings.
- Supporting clinical governance, training, financial, and HR management.
- Ensuring compliance with appraisals and revalidation processes.
- Promoting self-learning and professional development.
- Assisting in training medical students.
- Aiding partners in achieving strategic goals and improving financial performance.
- Reviewing and adhering to practice protocols and policies.
- Encouraging collaboration among staff.
Additionally, they may be requested to engage in practice audits, local service initiatives, review significant events using root cause analysis, comply with practice guidelines, and attend relevant training events.

Job Summary
The Salaried General Practitioner will work as an autonomous practitioner, providing high-quality medical services to the practice population. The post holder will deliver an excellent standard of patient-centred clinical care while ensuring compliance with the General Medical Services (GMS) contract, relevant legislation, and practice policies.
The post holder will uphold the General Medical Council's standards of good medical practice and contribute to the effective management and development of the practice. They will lead by example and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred medical care to the practice's eligible population.
- Provide services in accordance with the GMS contract and all applicable local and national requirements.
- Prescribe medicines generically, where appropriate, and in line with local and national prescribing guidance.
- Diagnose, monitor, and effectively manage long-term conditions.
- Undertake telephone triage and duty doctor responsibilities on a rotational basis.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely clinical records in accordance with professional standards, practice policies, and relevant guidance.
- Follow recognised clinical guidelines, evidence-based practice, and recommendations arising from clinical audits.
- Participate in approved research activities and active clinical trials, where appropriate.
Administration and Workload Management
- Complete clinical administration accurately and within appropriate timescales.
- Process referrals, repeat prescription requests, test results, correspondence, and other associated administrative tasks.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and accept an equitable share of the practice workload.
- Manage time and clinical responsibilities effectively, responding appropriately to changing workload and staffing demands.
Quality Improvement and Clinical Governance
- Contribute to the successful implementation of continuous improvement and quality initiatives across the practice.
- Participate in clinical audits as requested by the audit lead.
- Support the development and maintenance of robust clinical governance arrangements.
- Participate in reviews of significant events and near-miss incidents, using a structured approach such as root cause analysis.
- Contribute to local initiatives designed to improve service delivery and patient care.
- Accept delegated responsibility for one or more specific clinical, operational, or Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) areas.
- Promote a culture of openness, learning, safety, and continuous improvement.
Practice Development and Teamwork
- Attend and contribute effectively to practice and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Work collaboratively with partners, clinicians, managers, and administrative staff.
- Support the development and effective operation of the practice, including its clinical governance, training, financial management, and human resources arrangements.
- Assist the partners in achieving the practice's strategic objectives.
- Make appropriate recommendations to improve efficiency, enhance income, and reduce unnecessary expenditure without compromising patient care.
- Maintain regular and effective communication with all members of the practice team.
- Demonstrate professional leadership and promote a positive, inclusive, and collaborative working environment.
Education and Professional Development
- Maintain professional competence through continuing professional development, reflective practice, and self-directed learning.
- Promote an ethos of learning and professional development throughout the practice team.
- Support the education and training of medical students and other healthcare professionals from relevant clinical disciplines.
- Attend training sessions, meetings, and events organised by the practice or external agencies where appropriate.
- Participate fully in the annual appraisal process.
- Maintain the evidence and professional requirements necessary for successful GMC revalidation.
Policies, Standards, and Compliance
- Adhere at all times to GMC standards, including Good Medical Practice.
- Maintain awareness of and comply with all relevant practice policies, protocols, procedures, and clinical guidelines.
- Observe requirements relating to confidentiality, information governance, safeguarding, infection prevention and control, equality and diversity, and health and safety.
- Work within professional boundaries and seek appropriate advice or support when required.
