Job summary
Would you like to contribute to the target to reduce smoking prevalence in the Sunderland and South Tyneside areas to 5% or less by joining our team as a Tobacco Dependence Advisor ? The role of the Tobacco Dependence Advisor is to support inpatients while they are in hospital to either remain smokefree or quit smoking by providing advice and guidance around tobacco dependency and awareness of the support available both in hospital and in the community to support quitting smoking.
We are recruiting to 3.25wte roles, with part time applicants being welcomed as well as those wishing to work full time (37.5 hours per week). The role would require you to cover both Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside Hospital inpatient areas, and you would be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital. There is a shuttle bus which runs between both sites.
We are looking for candidates who have a level 3 NVQ qualification or equivalent, experienced in using computerised systems including excel, knowledge around tobacco dependence treatment, good communication skills, an ability to work under pressure and able to work well as part of a team.
Main duties of the job
- You will be required to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with difficult patients
- You must have the ability to build constructive relationships with warmth, using good communication skills and an empathetic manner
- You must have motivational skills and be able to inspire others

- You must have the ability to work flexibly and to manager workload effectively
- You must have the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- You must have experience of delivering training to groups
- You must have an NVQ Level 2 or equivalent
- Experience of working in a health promotion/ health setting and knowledge and understanding of drivers of ill health
- Full training will be provided on screening, brief interventions, tobacco dependence as well as the systems you will be required to use but some knowledge around tobacco dependence is required
- You must be able to recognise when to escalate concerns to senior staff
- A level 2 smoking cessation training qualification would be desirable as well as experience of working with people in a behaviour change context
- The service operates within office hours of 8:00am to 16:00pm with Saturday work on a rota basis
- Part time hours would be acceptable but would need to provide service cover across the working week, including Saturday cover within the team.
