Talbot Medical Centre are looking for a GP (up to 6 sessions) from November 2026, though we are happy to wait for the right candidate. The practice is in the seaside town of South Shields, close to the Tyne Tunnel and A19. We are proud to be part of the Deep End Network, providing innovative care for patients living in an area of high deprivation. We provide good access, excellent care and continuity to our patients. We have a stable patient population of around 8000 and are a well-regarded family practice providing care to generations of families.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will undertake the duties normally associated with working as a GP in primary care, in accordance with the agreed practice timetable and their individual scope of practice.

Duties will include:

  • Face-to-face and telephone consultations, including assessment and management of acute and ongoing health problems.
  • Home visits where clinically appropriate.
  • Reviewing and managing clinical correspondence, results and investigations.
  • Reviewing and authorising repeat prescriptions and dealing with medication-related queries.
  • Completing clinical documentation, referrals, reports and other necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Providing appropriate follow-up and continuity of care for patients where required.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the practice and wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Participating in practice meetings, clinical governance and other activities appropriate to the role.
  • Undertaking any other duties reasonably required of a GP within the practice.

The post-holder will contribute to the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care for all registered and temporary patients, working within professional standards, practice policies and their own scope of competence.

Job description

Working as part of the practice clinical team and in accordance with the agreed practice timetable, the post-holder will provide high-quality, patient-centred general medical services to our registered patient population.

The post-holder will be expected to:

  • Provide safe, effective and compassionate clinical care to patients presenting with a wide range of acute, chronic and undifferentiated conditions.
  • Make professional, autonomous clinical decisions based on the assessment of each patient, taking into account their individual needs, circumstances and preferences.
  • Assess, diagnose and manage patients presenting with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems, initiating appropriate treatment and investigation where required.
  • Manage patients with long-term conditions in accordance with current evidence-based guidance and practice protocols.
  • Develop and review individualised care plans in partnership with patients, supporting shared decision-making and self-management.
  • Undertake appropriate screening, health promotion and preventative care, identifying risk factors and early signs of disease.
  • Provide appropriate counselling, health education and lifestyle advice to support patients in improving and maintaining their health.
  • Refer patients appropriately to secondary care, community services and other healthcare professionals where required, ensuring effective continuity of care.
  • Admit and discharge patients from the practice caseload as clinically appropriate and in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Prescribe safely and effectively, including the generation of acute and repeat prescriptions, in line with current legislation, national guidance and practice prescribing policies.
  • Maintain accurate, clear and contemporaneous clinical records in accordance with professional and practice standards.
  • Participate in clinical audits, significant event reviews, quality improvement activity and other practice initiatives as required.
  • Work collaboratively with GPs, nursing staff, administrative staff and other members of the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to practice meetings, clinical discussions and the development of practice policies, protocols and procedures where appropriate.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and competence through continuing professional development and participation in appraisal and revalidation processes.
  • Support the practice in meeting its clinical, contractual, quality and governance requirements.
  • Undertake any other duties that are appropriate to the role of a salaried GP and support the effective delivery of high-quality primary care.

The post-holder will work within their professional competence and scope of practice and will contribute positively to the continued development of the practice and the services provided to our patients.
