Job summary

Our plans for our Eye Hospital in Sunderland are taking shape and will be our new home in Spring 2026. The new hospital means Sunderland will remain home to the regions only dedicated standalone eye hospital. It will strengthen our excellent reputation across the NHS, both regionally and nationally as a centre of excellence for ophthalmology care.

As a result, an exciting 37.5 hour opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic individual who has an interest in ophthalmology and who have substantial customer services experience or experience of working in a caring role (paid or unpaid) to join our Emergency Department Health Care Assistant Team in the new eye hospital. This role is rotational shifts, Days nights and weekends.

Main duties of the job

Core duties of the role are:

  • To assist the registered practitioner in providing high quality compassionate care and assistance to patients / relatives and their carers appropriate to their needs.
  • Responsible for carrying out tasks as delegated by the registered practitioner who has overall accountability for delegating care.

  • To assist the registered practitioner (or other healthcare practitioners) in providing high quality compassionate patient care and assistance to patients / relatives and their carers appropriate to their needs.
  • Always maintain patients privacy and dignity.
  • Responsible for carrying out General and Ophthalmic tasks as delegated by the registered practitioner who has overall accountability for delegating care.
  • Continue to develop and maintain General and Ophthalmic competences to support high quality safe care.
  • Be an effective part of the multi-disciplinary team contributing to the departmental objectives.
  • You will be expected to contribute to housekeeping and other department duties as required e.g. general tidiness, pre-determined stock levels are met and clinical equipment is clean, working and stored correctly. Assist with admin & clerical duties as required.
