Job summary

The post is available from July 2026 onwards on a 6 month fixed-term appointment with a view to extend to 12 months.

The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for Oncology inpatient care. You will join a team of junior Drs/SpRs and consultants and likely to take part in a SpR or consultant led ward round.

All applicants must have full GMC registration.

You should have sufficient medical experience by the start of the post. MRCP or MRCS Part A or equivalent, alongside previous oncology experience is highly desirable.

Please note that successful completion of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is our accepted minimum language requirement.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Fellow FY3 Equivalent in Medical Oncology

Nodal Point 3Full Time - 40 hours per weekFixed - Term - 6 Months

You will be part of multi-disciplinary teams incorporating Medical and Clinical Oncologists, Haematologists and Palliative Care Physicians and will be responsible for the care of inpatients under Consultants in these specialties. You will be expected to participate actively in the department's audit and clinical governance activities, as well as with the junior doctors' teaching programme. The posts include comprehensive induction, an educational programme and a full study leave allowance. You should have sufficient medical experience by the start of the post.

Haematology and Oncology

Department Information

Guy's and St Thomas' is a Joint Cancer Centre with King's College Hospital. The two Trusts offer a full range of services for the diagnosis and treatment of all adult cancers. Patients from across south east London attend for treatment which is not available at their local hospital. The Trust's cancer services are provided at both Guy's and St Thomas'.

TheRichard Dimbleby Cancer Information and Support Service| offers people with cancer information, complementary therapies and psychological support to help them and their families cope with their illness.

Operational

The duties of the post are those of a Trust Appointed F3/ST1/ST2 Level Doctor. They will include day-to-day care of adult inpatients within the Oncology and Haematology Directorate in collaboration with other junior/senior staff. The inpatient care for cancer patients is based at Guys Hospital and currently comprises two wards and an additional ward for outlying patients.

The post-holder will predominantly gain experience in looking after oncology inpatients but are actively encouraged to get experience of the whole department including the acute oncology assessment unit, radiotherapy, clinics and the chemotherapy day unit.

The successful candidate will join a large multidisciplinary team and work closely with consultants and SpRs on a rotation shared with F2 and IMT Drs .

Applications from candidates considering a career in these specialties are actively encouraged but this is also a post suitable for anyone wanting to gain more oncology experience before embarking on a general medical career.

You will be encouraged to participate actively in the Directorates audit, quality management programme and clinical governance activities.

There is twice weekly oncology teaching for all F3s, as well as monthly grand rounds. There is also the potential to apply for one of our leadership roles within the team.

The successful applicant will join other FY2/F3/IMT doctors within the department and will be required to take part in the Hospital-at-Night rota at Guys covering oncology and haematology. There are no general medical on calls and no A and E duties. This is a full shift resident on-call rota comprising 16/17 FY2/ST1/ST2 doctors.

The timetable will vary according to the needs of the Directorate and the successful applicants experience and duties, but will normally contain a mix of the various categories of work suitable for extending your medical training. Applicants who have already completed IMT/CMT and passed PACES, who wish to gain further specialist experience prior to committing themselves to a SpR/ST3 post, are also encouraged to apply.

The post-holder will be responsible to the relevant consultant for an individual patients care and should carry out the consultants instructions and policies, always seeking advice when appropriate. All Departmental protocols and policies must be followed and the post-holder must familiarise him/herself with these policies.

The post-holder will be encouraged to update his or her knowledge and skills through suitable Continuous Medical Education, including attending all of the Departments academic, teaching and audit meetings. Study leave is encouraged.
