Help Shape Our New Independent Travel Training Service

Sefton Council is excited to launch a new Independent Travel Training (ITT) Service and is looking for a passionate and motivated Travel Support Officers (Independent Travel Trainer) to join our Travel Support Team.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in developing and delivering a new service that will support children and young people, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), to build the confidence, skills and independence needed to travel safely within their community.

The Travel Support Team administers and delivers the Home to School Travel Support Policy on behalf of the Council. Alongside assessing eligibility and coordinating travel solutions, we are investing in Independent Travel Training to help young people develop lifelong travel skills and reduce reliance on commissioned transport where appropriate.

About the Role

As one of the first officers within our new Independent Travel Training service, you will have an opportunity to help shape the programme and make a real difference to the lives of young people across the borough.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

Assessing eligibility and travel support needs.

Developing Travel Support Plans and undertaking risk assessments where required.

Coordinating and delivering one-to-one and group-based Independent Travel Training.

Supporting young people to develop the confidence and practical skills needed to travel independently using public transport, walking routes or cycling.

Monitoring, recording and evaluating learner progress.

Working closely with families, schools and partner agencies to support successful travel outcomes.

Supporting the wider Travel Support Service, including maintaining records, handling enquiries.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about empowering young people to achieve greater independence and who enjoys working directly with individuals to help them overcome barriers and develop new skills.

About You

We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised individual who can build positive relationships with young people, families and professionals.

You will have:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience of supporting individuals to develop confidence and practical life skills.

Experience of collecting, maintaining and reporting information accurately.

The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.

A commitment to improving outcomes for children and young people.

We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with experience in:

Working with children and young people.

Supporting people with SEND or disabilities.

Education, youth work, social care or community-based services.

Travel training, sustainable travel initiatives or home-to-school transport services.
